Guest Post – all about denim

We are so excited to share our first ever Guest Blog Post with you! This post comes from the people behind two of Julia James Boutique’s favorite brands, KUT from the Kloth and See Thru Soul. They make the best outerwear and dresses at the most incredible prices. We always get excited when their new arrivals come in!

Besides their outerwear and dresses, Julia James carries denim from KUT from the Kloth and See Thru Soul. Let me tell you, our customers love these jeans. Super comfortable, the perfect length, and the perfect price – these brands really know their denim! They’ve put together a great post for us about the different ways jeans can be threaded so you know what to look for when picking out your own perfect denim. Check it our below:

There are many different ways denim can be woven to create the perfect pair of jeans. There are so many that most of us don’t even bother to learn the difference, but knowledge is power and it can be helpful to understand different types of denim when searching for your new favorite pair of jeans.

Some basic terms to know are warp threads versus weft threads. Warp threads are the surface threads that are what typically make up the surface of the jean. A weft thread is the thread woven in and out of the warp threads that create the denim twill. The most common weave found in jeans is the right hand twill. With this weave, the threads go upward and to the right in a diagonal line. And you guessed it, the left hand twill’s threads are diagonal and are upward and to the left. In the Kut from the Kloth jeans pictured here, you’ll see a left twill pattern. Because yarns woven in a right hand twill are closed, it makes them more compact, where as in left twilled denim the yarn is left open which makes the denim feel softer. A combination of the two, or a broken twill means the weave alternates between going left and right and has a zigzag pattern.

Are you overwhelmed yet? Here’s more: ring-spun denim actually has to do with the yarn; the cotton of the warp threads is spun on a ring instead of an open-ended spinning machine. The benefit of this type of method used is it produces a softer denim. When denim is created using a dual ring-spun method, the weft threads are also ring spun which is more expensive to produce, but makes an even softer, textured jean. When shopping you can justify (to yourself or your husband, partner, significant other) spending extra money if you notice the threads are uneven and thicker in some places. And your significant other will totally be okay with you spending more if the threads are uneven, right?
